Odd Jobs

Anything to support the travels! My friend Lou (who I used to work with at Fork) recently started her own painting company. I let her know that if she needed any help to give us a call... and she did! I ended up spending some hours after work (and on my days off) to sand ceilings and scrub decks. Not so much fun, but can't complain when you're making money. I also got to see some other areas of Wellington that I probably otherwise would have not.

Beautiful drive to Iven's new house

First load ready
Also helping Lou with the painting was a South African named Iven. He has been living in New Zealand for over a decade and has a painting company himself. He also has some crazy stories from living in Johannesburg, like how he got whacked with a machete at an atm and stood, bleeding, with his foot on the guys neck until the police arrived. "I'm telling you bru, I could of snapped his neck right there if I wanted to," he told me. He also mentioned how both his parents had to shoot people because of them robbing their home.

Last week he asked me to help him move house. I took off for the day and Joined Lou and her boyfriend Trevor in moving furniture and boxes into a truck and then into Iven's new house. We unloaded and Iven told us the appropriate room for the boxes. I found, what looked like the leg of a kitchen table with a giant nail through one end. "Where is this going?" I asked him. "Master bedroom," he replied. "I'm telling you, someone comes to rob me they'll get this right in their back."

This neighborhood has some great views

Iven, his wife, and his daughter moved to the Upper Hut region of Wellington. It took us eight hours and two truck loads. Iven was excited to show me his new man cave, a shed in the back yard, that he's going to convert to a mini bar. After everything was done, he paid us, fed us beers, and then took us all out for Indian.

Cricket World Cup 2015 and Tui

So basically for the past month the entire country has been cricket crazy. Yesterday was the quarterfinals with New Zealand versus West Indies. The game was right here in Wellington at the Westpac stadium which sold out all 34,500 seats. Now, for someone who hasn't ever watched cricket, let me tell you now, it is a long long game. The whole World Cup lasts over a month and the game yesterday went on from about 2pm to 9pm, and that is still a short game. Fortunately, I finished work before the game ended and all 34,500 fans migrated to the bars to celebrate their victory.

7th bloke to "catch a million"
Tui, which is a major beer of New Zealand is holding a competition throughout the World Cup. They will reward up to a million dollars to the fan who catches a fly ball one handed. The fan also has to be wearing the official orange shirt with a white target on it and the words, "Catch a Million." At yesterday's game the seventh man, since the start of the competition, was able to do this. Unfortunately, all the lucky guys before him will now have their reward split seven ways.

Tuatara Hospo Party

Tuatara Brewery is one of the most recognised breweries in Wellington. They are located about a hour drive outside the city in the town of Paraparaumu on the Kapiti Coast. They started winning awards for their beers in 2008 and since then have taken off. Their variety of beers are diverse and also really tasty.

The brewery hosts an event every year for the wonderful people who stock, tap, and sell their brews. Since I work at Fork & Brewer and we also have a contract with them in distribution, we were all invited along. Three buses picked us all up at 11am and hauled us out to the brewery to partake in free beer and food. They also had live music and tours of their brewery. I just can't get over the level of hospitality Tuatara showed us... and they're not even our employer.
